Belviq, Qsymia, Contrave -- comparison of 3 FDA approved weightloss drugs

A brief comparison of the three approved weigh-loss drugs and why BELVIQ is the best and safest.

I will add info to this file as soon as I get a chance but wanted to start this as placeholder because the subject is important as obesity and diabetes are among the top healthcare challenges for the whole planet. Hundreds of millions of people are obese and it is well documented that obesity leads to some 50 other diseases.

For now, here is a very simple, basic comparison of these three drugs:

* see for full prescribing and safety information

Belviq does not stimulate the metabolism but Contrave and Qsymia do.
Belviq works just as well as Qsymia and Contrave's normal dose.
Belviq is FAR safer than Qsymia and Contrave.
Belviq has a far cleaner safety profile than Contrave and Qsymia,
Belviq has had far more positive patient feedback written about it than Qsymia despite the fact that Qsymia has been in the market a lot longer than Belviq. Contrave is not in the market yet but soon will be and I doubt we will see too many patients showing the kind of excitement that we've seen from Belviq patients -- why? Because Contrave can make a healthy person get sick including getting suicidal tendencies.
THE FDA HAS MANDATED THAT CONTRAVE HAS A BLACK LABEL SAFETY WARNING. Patients should read this label carefully and decide for themselves whether they want to expose themselves to these severe side effects.  Clinical trials showed a significant level of patients suffering from severe side effects of Contrave.

Belviq's most common side effect (both reported in clinical trials and reported in the real world) is a mild temporary headache and dry mouth which most people report only lasts a few days and then for them life is as usual except that their craving for food substantially diminishes if they're a responder (and many people report that they quickly know if they're responders although FDA's guideline is losing 5% in 3 months as an indication of being a responder -- many people have reported having lots far more than that).

As a positive side effect many Belviq patients have reported to sleep better - and reduce or quit smoking and alcohol consumption.

I personally don't see why any patient would want to pay the price of tolerating the side effects of Qsymia and Contrave while Belviq can work just as well or better and be far far safer -- but that's my opinion and this idea nor anything else written in this article should be considered a medical advice.

Further info on Belviq is available on including prescribing and safety information -- and lots of testimonials are available on

Again, please consult your doctor and do not reply on anything said here as medical advice.

Good luck shedding those pounds -- losing weight can feel really good and improve overall health and quality of life and happiness significantly.

IN TERMS OF SAFETY BELVIQ BEATS CONTRAVE AND QSYMIA HANDS DOWN -- BELVIQ IS THE "CLEANEST" "SAFEST" OF THE THREE DRUGS AND HAS THE  MILDEST SIDE EFFECTS. There are many people on Belviq who have not experienced any side effects or very mild headache for a couple of days -- or just better sleep as a side effect which they welcome.

Contrave's Adverse Reactions: Most common adverse reactions (≥5%) include: nausea (32.5%), constipation (19.2%), headache (17.6%), vomiting (10.7%), dizziness (9.9%), insomnia (9.2%), dry
mouth (8.1%), and diarrhea (7.1%). And not to mention suicide risk which FDA mandated to be on the label for Contrave. Ouch!!!!!   (i.e., "Black Label Warning")

Please just look at the adverse effects section for Contrave:   83% of Contrave's completers suffered from Nausea!  Please note that dropout because of AEs was double than Placebo groups in Contrave clinical trials (In BELVIQ clinical trials numbers in real drug and control were similar).

See full prescribing information for complete boxed warning
• Increased risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults taking antidepressants for major depressive disorder and other psychiatric disorders. (5.1)
• Monitor for worsening and emergence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. (5.1)
• Serious neuropsychiatric events have been reported in patients taking bupropion for smoking cessation. (5.2)
• CONTRAVE has not been studied in pediatric patients. (5.1)

"The most frequently cited reason for withdrawing from the naltrexone /bupropion combination (Contrave) was adverse events, and the most frequently cited adverse event was nausea." -

Because it contains bupropion, Contrave has a boxed warning to alert health care professionals and patients to the increased risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors associated with antidepressant drugs. The warning also notes that serious neuropsychiatric events have been reported in patients taking bupropion for smoking cessation.

In clinical trials, the most common adverse events which occurred at a rate =5% and =1.5 times placebo included paraesthesia (tingling in fingers/toes), dizziness, dysgeusia (altered taste), insomnia, constipation, and dry mouth.[1]

In the U.S., the drug label contains warnings for increased heart rate, suicidal behavior and ideation, glaucoma, mood and sleep disorders, creatine elevation, and metabolic acidosis. Some of these warnings are based on historical observations in epilepsy patients taking topiramate.

BELVIQ -- The Safest & Best!

For Belviq's complete safety information and prescribing information see

In comparison Belviq has a very mild and clean safety profile -- and its Belviq has very comparable efficacy to the other two -- and together with phen, so far all indications are that it works really well.

In clinical trials, the most common side effect was headache, experienced by about 18% of drug arm participants compared to 11% of placebo participants. Headache was the only reported side effect to occur at a frequency greater than 5 percentage points above placebo.

BELVIQ is not just for weight loss. It can also reduce HbA1c (regardless of weight loss). Also BELVIQ prevents pre-diabetes from becoming T2DM patients (40% reduction).

BELVIQ is also used for smoking cessation. .

Obesity has become a global pandemic and we now know medically that once the body gets so big it becomes extremely hard for the person to lose weight with diet and exercise alone. In the US 1/3 of adult population is obese and 2/3 of American adults are overweight. Child obesity is also a major issue. Diabetes is also a major issue and is related to weight. According to a famous doctor, obesity can lead to 50 other diseases.

A new weight loss drug had hit the US market this week but it's a combination of two generics: naltrexone and bupropion -- and -- WARNING: it has a black label warning that it can make a person suicidal. The safety profile of it is pretty "dirty" in terms of side effects.

I believe the BEST WEIGHT LOSS PRODUCT OUT THERE is BELVIQ ( , It has a very clean safety profile in terms of side effects so it's a drug of choice for the medical doctors I know, and it works really well for responders.

When it comes to weight loss drugs, safety is very important. The most common side effects of BELVIQ is a slight headache for a few days and most people I know who are taking it have not had any side effects and those who have, only a couple of days of a mild headache until the body gets used to it.

This page has a lot of testimonials. has the full prescribing information.

About 60% of lives are covered by insurance. Those that are not can get a discount coupon from -- they offer a 2 week free trial coupon.

I am telling people this because I have several friends and family members who are obese and having done extensive research I'm convinced BELVIQ is the safest and best FDA weight loss drug out there.

The nice thing about a drug with an excellent safety profile is that it doesn't make you sick! An average person whose only problem is being overweight or obese or diabetic can take BELVIQ and not get sick as a result!

A third product is also a combination of two generics and it also has severe side effect safety profile.

So if you're obese or overweight and have not been able to lose weight on your own, ask your doctor about BELVIQ. It's also a diabetic drug and has had wonderful benefits in that regards.

BELVIQ (lorcaserin) is a single novel molecule discovered by San Diego's Arena Pharma (NASDAQ:ARNA) (I have an interest in that company) and works as a 5HT2C Seratonin receptor agonist -- the technological marvel is that it is highly targeted (triggers the 2C which controls appetite not the 2B which effects the heart). And what I like a lot about is is that it does NOT stimulate the metabolism (doesn't amp you up).

Obviously, the above is in no way a medical advice. Just sharing something that's important (and available in USA right now) with friends.

Scientific evidence has shown most obese people can't lose weight with diet and exercise alone because of changes in the brain, therefore AMA has declared obesity a disease and I believe based on extensive research the best and safest medicine for it is BELVIQ. ( check out www.belsuccess.coom and ) -- it also treats diabetes and has shown positive results in smokers as well as treatment of NASH.

G Protein Coupled Receptors: Cell Surface Receptors Mediating Majority of Cell to Cell Communication in the Brain.

This is a very exciting area of science. Here's the latest presentation on the subject by a leader in this field, San Diego's Arena Pharma (NASDAQ: ARNA), inventor of BELVIQ (for weight loss):

Obesity is a disease. It's been determined that diet and exercise alone does not work for most people. Lorcaserin (BELVIQ) is a single molecule that was discovered by NASDAQ:ARNA which helps a person lose weight by triggering a very specific serotonin receptor. BELVIQ is also a diabetic drug. Obesity and diabetic kill many people (I think you knew Rajesh who died from diabetes), negatively impact the quality of life, and cost the healthcare system in the USA, ONE BILLION DOLLARS A DAY! And it's a global pandemic. And the nice thing about BELVIQ is it has an excellent safety profile.

One of the areas I follow is biotechnology and this is a hot biotech news on the wires for those interested in weightloss.

A new study on the safety of coadministration of BELVIQ with phentermine has met its primary safety objective. This is good news for people in USA who are interested in weight loss (BELVIQ is not yet available in other countries although it's under review in several) as it further boosts the already good efficacy of BELVIQ without safety issues. When it comes to weight loss medication, safety is of utmost importance.

Reminder: Diet+Exercise is the best way to lose weight but for most people that does not work because of changes in the brain associated with excessive weight. The American Medical Association has declared obesity a disease -- it can lead to 50 other diseases. BELVIQ is a medicine with the cleanest safety profile of the 3 medicines approved by the FDA in the last 15 years. The other two have severe side effects. BELVIQ's most common side effect is a temporary headache.

BELVIQ is prescribed with diet and exercise and people who have been on it are amazing results (see I personally know a number of people who've lost over 50 pounds on BELVIQ without experiencing any adverse side effects except the ability too sleep deeper!

BELVIQ works by triggering a very specific, targeted, serotonin receptor in the hypothalamus (5HT2c) which basically removes cravings and feeling hunger -- so an overweight or obese person doesn't need to snack as much and doesn't need to eat a second plate and feels content with little food. Many people actually report they are saving a lot of money on food since being on BELVIQ.

The efficacy data of the combination trial will be released next week at Obesity Week in Boston. It will be very interesting to see the efficacy numbers. BELVIQ already has very good efficacy which is comparable to the other two drugs, Qsymia and Contrave, except that BELVIQ is far safer. Qsymia can cause cleft lip and Contrave has a black label warning about suicide risks! Yuyks! Since BELVIQ is available why would anybody want to take Qsymia or Contrave?

I know doctors who are already prescribing BELVIQ with phentermine for a short term boost to weight loss followed by BELVIQ-only, and they've seen great results. One doctor wrote:

"Clinic today. Young couple. In 30s. Both 12 weeks on B+P. Combined weight loss of 103 lbs. The feedback was that their mattress would last much longer. They said that, not me."

If you're overweight, obese, or diabetic and are interested in trying BELVIQ, talk to your doctor. provides a savings coupon for those whose insurance doesn't cover it yet and a 15 day free trial.

I invested in Arena Pharmaceuticals (NADAQ: ARNA) because I believed that BELVIQ would get FDA approval, and because obesity is a pandemic and I believe BELVIQ can help a lot of people improve their health, as well as help the economies. In the USA the healthcare cost associated with treatment of obesity and diabetic are estimated to be one Billion dollars a day (according to combined study of Cornell University and ADA)! With 2/3 of Americans overweight and 1/3 obese -- and obesity being a global pandemic, the opportunity to help the world is tremendous.

Results of an ongoing trial for use of BELVIQ for quitting smoking will be available before the end of the year.
